Wheat Allergy Symptoms in Women

Wheat allergy symptoms in women are really comparable to wheat allergy signs in men. Regrettably, the signs are even similar to additional illness symptoms and many of them are some varieties of symptoms that we often think as light irrelevant symptoms.

One thing we need to keep in mind is that wheat allergy is not the same with celiac illness. Individuals with celiac disease might not have direct signs, however those with wheat allergy can easily feel a significant modification in wellness. It is extremely important for us to recognize the symptoms of wheat allergy because it is commonly misinterpreted with other diseases symptoms.

Digestive Wheat Allergy Symptoms in Women

Digestive system is the most afflicted system in our body. Somebody with wheat allergy will certainly discover that the digestion procedure is impaired. As a result, gassing and bloating are typically happened as the result of slow and poor digestion.

Not just those 2 signs, however even when wheat foods are absorbed in a high quantity, diarrhea can take place. Diarrhea is the outcome of body’s effort to remove the peculiar compound, in this instance it is wheat.

As said previously, the digestive process can be fairly slow-moving and it will even lead to constipation. Stool texture and smell change might additionally suggest a wheat allergy sign.

As stated before, wheat allergy symptom can happen in immediate symptoms. If we are having such symptoms on the skin right after we take foods with wheat compound, then it is possible that we have wheat allergy. However it can also take in some people several hours.

Neurological wheat allergy symptoms in women

Wheat allergy symptoms in women can cause neurological signs. Complications like fatigue can be as the result of poor food digestion. An additional neurological complication is intestinal irritation.

This condition can lead to additional issues like autointoxication that will certainly cause circulatory system contaminant. The contaminant makes the liver works so much more difficult and the waste materials are able to wreck the body system balance. Somebody that is having autointoxication will definitely have bad concentration and sluggishness.

Identifying and Treating Wheat Allergy Symptoms in Women

Wheat or food intolerance can easily be detected with an elimination diet on the compound we suspect to be the reason of allergic reaction. We can really make this diagnosis by ourselves before we go to the specialist.

We would even suggest to work with the correct procedures in advance, so the medical diagnosis can be done the right way. The full wheat sensitivity exam does not occasionally work accurately for minor wheat allergy cases, so an elimination diet can easily be the cheapest and most effective ways to identify wheat allergy. We can additionally attempt to get rid of gluten and write it in our log, so we can get rid of foods that affect us the most.

However if you have an appointment for a full medical examination they may require a normal diet be started again so that they can more accurately discover teh toxins produced by the body to fight the wheat attacking the body intestines.

Whether we are chatting about a wheat allergy, sensitivity is something that we can easily not alleviate. All that we can easily do is preventing products that can cause our allergic reaction.

The exact same thing goes of wheat allergy.

If we have comprehended the signs and our body is giving bad response to wheat, then all that we can easily do is simply avoid all wheat items and all products that have a potential hazard of cross contamination with wheat. Changing the entire food menus and our daily routines are needed as well. There are so many diners and restaurants that serve meals without wheat as the major or supporting components.

Discovering the potential triggers items online (and we list many of them here) will definitely also serve us better to identify various kinds of foods (for example oatmeal) that are gluten free and hence avoid any foods that can become the trigger of wheat allergy symptoms in women.

If you are having such signs on the skin right after you take foods with any wheat compound, then it is possible that you have developed a wheat allergy problem.

Neurological wheat allergy symptoms in women

Wheat allergy symptoms in women can point to simple neurological symptoms for example fatigue could be simply the result of poor digestion or some form of irritation of the intestines. This will stop the body being able to properly absorb all the nutrients it needs to provide itself with energy needed even for simple thought processes and concentration.

Toxins in the body will also mean the body is busy defending itself and clearing out the contamination it finds. In particular the liver is working several times harder tah usual so may not be able to extract all the healthy nutrition before the blood moves on. This will leave everyone affected feeling very sluggish and depressed about their inability to just about anything.

Detecting and Treating Wheat Allergy Symptoms in Women

Wheat or food intolerance can be diagnosed with elimination diet on the foodstuff we suspect to be the cause of allergy. Making use of a wheat sensitivity exam is often not working for minor wheat allergy situations, so trying out a full elimination diet can be the cheapest and most efficient ways to detect whether you have a form of wheat allergy.

If we have actually recognized the signs and our body is offering bad reaction to wheat, then all that we can easily do is preventing all wheat products and all products that have a danger of cross contamination with wheat.

Wheat Intolerance and You

You feel undesirable most of the time. You’re tired, achy, and it appears like you’ve either got diarrhea or constipation practically consistently.

Perhaps your skin itches and flakes, or you get unexplained breakouts or hives. You might even throw up every now and then, for no apparent explanation.

If you’ve looked for medical support for your issues, you might have left the doctor’s office frustrated feeling as if you just weren’t being taken as having a genuine medical complaint.

Possibly the medical specialist threw out his professional terminology using words like irritable bowel syndrome or chronic fatigue disorder, leaving you merely as puzzled as when you came in. So you began looking online, and you found something intriguing about this wheat allergy problems website.

Is it feasible that you are experiencing a food allergy or intolerance?

In short — yes. It’s incredibly feasible.

There are numerous kinds of food intolerance and sensitivities, and wheat intolerance is among the most typical. All wheat intolerance issues are not produced equally.

Broadly speaking, health problems related to wheat consumption (or even just contact) fall into three main classifications:

1) Celiac (or Coeliac) Disease

Celiac illness is an immunological (sensitive) reaction in the intestinal tract to an incredibly specific protein had in wheat and many other grains, called gliadin — a gluten protein. It has lots of additional names, featuring gluten sensitivity, gluten enteropathy, gluten intolerance, and coeliac sprue. Over time, it can easily create damage to the intestinal tract, however it can be efficiently treated with a gluten-free diet.

The bad news is, people with celiac illness have it for life. There’s no treatment, and people do not “grow out of it”.

The really good news is that much of the damages done to the body can easily repair itself after gluten is removed from the diet. See our associated articles on Gluten free recipes and foods.

2) Wheat Allergy Reaction

Wheat allergic reaction is even an immunological response to wheat. Unlike celiac disease, nonetheless, it includes allergic reactions to several different proteins found in wheat and related cereal grains.

It can easily be gastrointestinal, however it can easily also resemble hay fever, causing asthma-like breathing symptoms, hives, breakouts, contact dermatitis, cough, runny nose, and scratchy eyes.

Often called “baker’s allergy”, wheat sensitivity may be intensified by exercising or taking aspirin, inducing a very violent and hazardous — also life-threatening — allergic condition called anaphylaxis.

Once more, avoidance is the key, though some wheat allergy victims are able to put up with alternative gluten-containing grains such as barley and rye.

3) Wheat Intolerance

Confusingly, celiac disease is sometimes called “gluten intolerance”. Wheat intolerance normally refers to a non-allergic bad reaction to consuming wheat. Wheat intolerance is not typically as violent or acute as wheat allergic reaction, and can easily be a lot more difficult to identify due to the fact that the signs may manifest lots of hrs after the usage of wheat; even up to a few days later on.

Poorly understood, it’s still an immune-related reaction, but one which influences a completely different part of the immune system than that which creates a ragweed victim to sneeze or someone with a peanut allergic reaction to go into anaphylactic shock.

Avoidance is still the primary method to fixing the existing issue in people with wheat sensitivity, but there’s good news — with mindful management, some individuals could have the ability to accumulate a tolerance for little amounts of wheat over time.

If you think you may have a type of wheat intolerance problem, there are a variety of screening and therapy possibilities, which we will certainly cover in future write-ups — along with some exceptional ideas and recipes for living gluten-free … with style.

Broadly speaking, health issues related to wheat allergy symptoms fall into into three classifications:

1) Celiac (or Coeliac) Disease

Celiac Illness is an immunological Illness — allergic response in sensitive intestinal reaction to a very specific protein contained extremely wheat and included other grains, a number of additional — a gluten protein.

2) Wheat Allergy

Wheat allergy is an allergic reaction or in more medical terms immunological response to wheat.

Wheat intolerance generally refers to a non-allergic adverse reaction to consuming wheat. Wheat intolerance is not normally as violent or acute as wheat sensitivity, and can be a great deal more challenging to detect because the signs may manifest lots of hours after the contact with wheat; it may even be up to a couple of days later before any real symptoms show.

Avoidance is still the major method to solving the existing problem in people with wheat level of sensitivity, however there’s good news — with careful management, some people may be able to create up a tolerance for small amounts of wheat over time.

Why it is important for many of our readers to follow

samples of foods to avoid in a gluten free diet

recipes that are designed for a completely gluten free diet.

We apologise for the delay in completing this page but health problems have messed up our previously arranged schedule over. The new page should appear with this next week.

the following text is filler text taken from wikipedia.com on the subject of wheat but will NOT be on the final vesion

Wheat (Triticum spp.)[1] is a cereal grain, originally from the Levant region of the Near East and Ethiopian Highlands, but now cultivated worldwide. In 2007 world production of wheat was 607 million tons, making it the third most-produced cereal after maize(784 million tons) and rice (651 million tons).[2] In 2009, world production of wheat was 682 million tons, making it the second most-produced cereal after maize (817 million tons), and with rice as close third (679 million tons).[3]

Wheat is grown on more land area than any other commercial crop and is the most important staple food for humans. World trade in wheat is greater than for all other crops combined.[4] Globally, wheat is the leading source of vegetable protein in human food, having a higher protein content than either maize (corn) or rice, the other major cereals. In terms of total production tonnages used for food, it is currently second to rice as the main human food crop and ahead of maize, after allowing for maize’s more extensive use in animal feeds.

Wheat was a key factor enabling the emergence of city-based societies at the start of civilization because it was one of the first crops that could be easily cultivated on a large scale, and had the additional advantage of yielding a harvest that provides long-term storage of food. Wheat contributed to the emergence of city-states in the Fertile Crescent, including the Babylonian and Assyrian empires. Wheat grain is a staple food used to make flour for leavened, flat and steamed breads, biscuits, cookies, cakes, breakfast cereal, pasta, noodles, couscous[5] and for fermentation to make beer,[6] other alcoholic beverages,[7] or biofuel.[8]

Wheat is planted to a limited extent as a forage crop for livestock, and its straw can be used as a construction material for roofing thatch.[9][10] The whole grain can be milled to leave just the endosperm for white flour. The by-products of this are rban and germ. The whole grain is a concentrated source of vitamins, minerals, and protein, while the refined grain is mostly starch.

As already said this is temporary content and will not be appearing on the final version of our gluten free diet page.

Really us women seem to get a raw deal with health issues generally, don’t we?

Because of our body physical make-up being different to men in so many ways we are susceptible to addition problems that are not fully covered in the Wheat allergy symptoms in adults so keep reading here for more information.

I would strongly urge you from my own personal experience that you should always read the labels on any food products you are buying. In addition to the list above I would be adding items like ice-cream and catsup both of which can hide the wheat flour ingredient from the main list so be very careful.

Are you now asking yourself whether you have a wheat allergy problem?

Even more so if you are going to keep up a wheat free diet you will need to be able to spot which ordinary products bought straight off the store shelf contain hidden amounts of wheat products in sauces etc.

Symptoms of wheat allergy in women

There are some wheat allergy symptoms in women, which may be also almost similar with the wheat allergy symptoms in adults men.

These symptoms may include;

allergic rhinitis, the immediate symptoms here include: coughs sneezing along with itchy eyes, nose, throat and ears. Runny nose leading to blockages making you breathe only through the mouth. This can also have knock-on affects if you are pregnant so make sure you discuss this complication with your doctor.

eczema and other types of skin problems are fairly common.

bronchospasm This is the contraction of the muscle in the breathing tubes particularly the walls of the bronchi and bronchioles, causing narrowing of the lumen which makes breathing more difficult.

stomach upset. This is much more of a problem for us women as stomach upsets can go into our intestinal areas and get mixed up with other abdominal pains being experienced by us.

Wheat Allergy Symptoms in Women special dangers

If you are experiencing any wheat allergy symptoms in women problems at all and suspect that you or know you are pregnant then you must discuss it with your medical doctor at the earliest opportunity. Women who are experiencing wheat allergy problems are often unable to obtain the full value of nutrition from their foods as the stomach walls and small intestinal walls are damaged by the antibodies produced to fight the potential danger from the wheat. If you as the mother are unable to extract enough nutritional value from foodstuffs then your baby is certainly not going to get enough either and additional supplement foods may be required to protect the baby.

Celiac disease and wheat allergy

We would not be doing our job fully if we did not mention that some people experiencing what appears to be a wheat allergy may actually be affected by celiac disease. If this is a celiac disease then it may not be the wheat grain that is causing all the wheat allergy symptoms in women problem but the gluten that is present in the wheat but also in rye, barley and other grains.

Celiac Disease affected people will also find it difficult to absorb sufficient nutrition from the food they are eating so they can easily slip into weight loss and potentially malnutrition. the same problems lie here as we discussed elsewhere when reading about wheat allergy symptoms in women and pregnancy. So be extra careful especially as the body may not be able to fully absorb the contents of any birth control pills leading to unexpected pregnancy when you thought you were fully protected.

To balance up the risk of unplanned pregnancy just mentioned women with celiac disease and to a lesser extent with wheat allergy problems or intolerance to gluten or wheat may also have potential infertility problems and could have a higher risk of miscarriage.

The majority of women who have wheat allergy symptoms will find on being tested that they do NOT have celiac disease. Even people who are displaying a number of signs of celiac disease symptoms will prove not to have celiac disease but have instead only what is termed as gluten sensitivity. If this is the case make sure you should discuss the issues in more detail with your doctor.

However, we know that for many of us that healthy wheat grain brings with it a wheat allergy that can threaten our life. It is more common in children but wheat allergy symptoms in adults are often not recognised and treated in time as we tend to put it off.

Before we can fully explore in much more depth signs of wheat allergy symptoms in adults we need to explore more heath condition.

What is a wheat allergy and how is it caused?

An allergy (in this case a wheat allergy) refers to the abnormal behavior of our body’s immune system due to the protein contained in the wheat grain. Once you get affected with such an ailment, it directly gives the indication that your immune system has developed a special antibody that makes the proteins within the wheat you consume, next to unbearable.

Wheat Allergy Symptoms in Adults

Within a short while from the time you take your meals with wheat in any of obvious or hidden forms, wheat allergy symptoms in adults start surfacing one after another and the process continues can continue for hours afterwards. Some of the most common wheat allergy symptoms in adults are mentioned here:

Allergic To Wheat?

Are you allergic to wheat? If you are reading this page and don’t know whether you are allergic or not then I guess you must be trying to check out the possibility by researching for wheat allergy symptoms in adults, But lets look at some basic questions.

Are you experiencing any digestion problems after eating wheat-based foods such as as bread or pasta?

Are you affected by sneezing or wheezing more with shortness of breath even without eating wheat just being near to it?

Have you noticed any unusual skin conditions e.g. a rash and itchiness?

Common Wheat Allergy Symptoms in Adults

Before you start organizing your life based on new specialized diets and avoiding wheat allergy foods, you must be sure your disease is properly diagnosed. Simply because something is described below it may point towards a wheat allergy symptom in adults it may also be pointing towards another cause. Before you pay a visit to your doctor, there are things to consider; think about whether you experience these wheat allergy symptoms:

Respiratory system wheat allergy symptoms

Asthma. Asthma is a fairly common chronic inflammatory disease of the airways to the lungs. It is usually characterized by the following symptoms: wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. Typically a wheeze is identified as a continuous, coarse, and often a whistling sound produced in the respiratory airways during breathing. Sufferers are usually using an inhaler to ease the chest and the airways See asthma problems for more info click here This can be caused by a whole range of reactions including dust and pollen so a wheat allergy may not be the cause of the problem

Digestion and wheat allergy symptoms in adults

Stomach ache or discomfort is a symptom occurring as a result of many diseases. The common characteristic is abdominal pain. It can however be accompanied by a feeling of bloating. Bloating would be defined as swelling of the abdominal area especially the feeling of full and tight abdomen.

In the same way vomiting after consuming wheat products could also be a allergy symptom in adults caused by the wheat grain itself.

Swelling in the face or mouth.Be very wary of any swelling that my occur in the face or mouth. Angiodema, the medical name for swelling in the face or mouth should be treated as a medical emergency so avoid it resulting in anaphylactic shock which can be a deadly reaction.

Although allergies is one of the most common reasonsthe tongue can start to swell for any number of other reasons including allergies to some chemicals or medication. If it is a food allergies such as wheat you are more likely to be witnessing a a swollen throat or lips rather than the tongue.

Skin rashes and wheat allergy symptoms in adults:

Food allergy can also bring in a range of skin conditions including eczema and dermatitis or even hives (Urticaria)

The term Eczema is often applied to a range of skin conditions which do not clear up fast. Symptoms can include a general dryness of the skin along with rashes with redness, swelling, skin blistering, flaking away, oozing liquids, peeling off or even bleeding if scratched or rubbed hard as a natural reaction to the itch.

Hives is often caused by food allergies, not just a wheat allergy, symptoms in adults include pale red raised and very itchy bumps and rarely last for more than four to six weeks.

Headaches can be a wheat allergy symptoms in adults:

The most common types of headaches triggered by food including wheat allergies are the sinus headaches (facial pain), cluster headaches and.of course migraines.

As we discussed earlier swelling of the face can be a severe reaction to some foods including a wheat allergy Symptoms in adults would generally be around the sinus and may be more accurately described as facial pain rather than headaches. These pains would be triggered mainly when other wheat allergy symptoms are also present such as itching hay fever sneezing or other wheezing conditions such as asthma.

Headaches on just one side of the face usually around the eye area and the back of the eye often referred to as cluster headaches and can be triggered by food including wheat allergies symptoms in adults have been described as the most painful type of sharp headache they have ever experienced even worse than migraines.

Headaches due to migraine are usually throbbing and made worse of sunlight and feeling of nausea often leading to vomiting. They can be very severe where sufferers need to lie down darkened room to cope or fairly mild.

Celiac Disease Symptoms

Celiac Disease Symptoms: Before looking at what are the symptoms of celiac disease let’s first agree about what is celiac disease?

According to the The National Foundation for Celiac Awareness (NFCA) it is reckoned that 97% of all people currently living with celiac disease don’t even know they have it. Research into Celiac disease symptoms and treatment suggests that there are currently 3 million Americans.

This is shocking because that same organisation shows Celiac disease can have serious long-term consequences for people if not treated. It can lead for example to problems such as anaemia, infertility, osteoporosis, weight loss, hair loss and delayed growth in children.

“It is also associated with a greater prevalence of other autoimmune disorders, such as Type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and thyroid and liver diseases,” says Rachel Begun, MS, a registered dietician and author of .The Gluten Free RD

Celiac disease is caused by inflammatory contact of gliadin and enzyme tissue. Inflammation affects the lining of the small intestine and reduces its ability to absorb nutrients. Celiac disease damage Villi, which play a crucial part in absorbing nutrients and proteins into the blood stream

Celiac disease can be inherited, so if any other member of the family is already affected others will have perhaps a 10-20% risk of having that disease.

Celiac Disease Symptoms — Which are the main ones?

The body is just not able to benefit from all the goodness from the food we take in so we tend to start exhibiting a lot of problems. Some of them in the early stages of Celiac disease are fairly common and could be interpreted as pointing to a number of other medical problems. So other tests will have to carried out by doctors to confirm the earlier suspicions.

However it is known that a large number of people who have the disease will show no Celiac Disease Symptoms.

Most common celiac disease symptoms include:

Digestive complications. This can range from stomach aches after eating to frequent diarrhea and constipation. however this can include signs of malnutrition, weight loss, feeling bloated, cramps.

Associated problems include dental problems (including mouth ulcers and bone disorders), aching joints, iron deficiency and fatigue.

Celiac Disease symptoms and women

Many women who are effected by Celiac Disease will find they cannot carry their baby for the full term so special care should be taken and all midwives and doctors involved should be told about the potential risk. Obviously if the mother is not able to absorb nutrients then they cannot be passed to the baby in the womb and so often the do not survive to full term.

Children who are born with undiagnosed celiac diseases are likely to be much smaller and weaker and then trend to develop at a much slower rate then other children of a a similar age.

Many people have made connections with Irritable Bowel Syndrome as well. However many people (including my wife Carol) have been affected by by IBS for many years but tests have shown there is no connection. Her problems with IBS continue whether she is on a complete gluten free diet or not.

Diagnosis and Test:

Medical tests for Celiac Disease symptoms involve carrying out tests to determine the level of auto antibodies. The antibodies are produced by our body naturally to deal with the harm being done by the presence of Gluten which is damaging the small intestine. If the tests prove the levels are higher than expected a small intestine biopsy is then carried out to confirm the original diagnosis.

Whilst children and young people can recovery within a few weeks it can take as much as two to three years for an older person to recover fully.

However one major word of warning if you are preparing to go for tests for Celiac Disease symptoms then I strongly recommend that you should NOT switch to a gluten free diet. The gluten needs to be present in the body in order for it to be detected as a problem and it can sometimes take a few weeks to show up again if you have been off it for some time.

Remedy – Change Your Diet:

Research over many years have proven beyond all doubt that most symptoms of Celiac disease will begin to fade away shortly after the patient adopts a fully gluten free diet lifestyle. Gluten free products are widely available in most larger stores. However special attention should be given to normal products such as bread and some beers which contain wheat.

Adopting a full Gluten free diet not only gets rid of all the uncomfortable celiac disease symptoms but reduces the level of antibodies produced by the body and minimizes celiac disease reducing the chance of long term damage to intestines.

Celiac disease symptoms fade if proper medication is taken along with regular exercise. It is always highly advisable to consult a doctor before taking any medication and in case of celiac, more care should be taken.

Wheat Intolerance or Wheat Allergy : The Facts

It is clear that an ever increasing number of people throughout the western world now believing that their body is not able to cope with wheat and they have developed a wheat allergy or wheat intolerance.

However we know that many of these people are self diagnosing and then treating the wrong problem. If they think they have a wheat allergy they will go to large measures to self treat that wheat problem. If they believe they have a wheat intolerance they think they should research the cures for that. They could be missing out on the real problem and subsequent treatment is wrong.

I say this because wheat problems can easily be divided into three different main medical groupings each with some similarities between their symptoms but with different causes. We need to treat the real cause of your wheat intolerance problem not just your wheat related symptoms.

To help people identify the real wheat medical problem we have taken the time to to develop this helpful guide to the main health conditions involving wheat in the diet, their symptoms, methods of diagnosis and treatments.

What is a wheat allergy?

Wheat allergy problems can produce a variety of symptoms in the body such as sneezing itching, rashes, watery eyes, runny nose, coughing, hay fever, headaches, nausea, digestive problems, swollen limbs or general aches and pains. (See a fuller list of the wheat allergy symptoms in adults here.)

Allergies to food generally affect between one and two percent of the adult population with wheat allergies affecting less than one per cent. However food allergies are usually difficult to initially identify as our body can take several hours after consumption of the suspect food maybe even days before any reaction occurs. If the body does does have wheat allergy problem it will produce antibodies to fight off the problem and these antibodies can be measured in medical tests.

Unlike classic allergies, if you are allergic to wheat you will usually be allergic to more than one food. On average, sufferers react to four or five different foods. This, of course, makes it more difficult for us to even suspect that it is wheat when we may also be reacting to a food allergy to something else that we are eating.

Wheat Allergy test procedures

A wheat allergy can be diagnosed by a simple prick test procedure available at a hospital or private allergy clinic. Put simply a nurse will prick your skin with a sharp needle and then place a small amount of wheat over the prick and leave it for 15 minutes or so. If you have a confirmed wheat allergy the skin will flare up and react in a rash in that area. The whole process is completely painless and the test for wheat allergy this way is highly recommended if being carried out by a competent person.

There is another simple test that will mean waiting a little longer for the results to come back. The RAST blood test involves sending a sample of your blood and testing for the wheat allergen and the antibodies developed by the body to protect itself against any harm. If found to be be present then the test is regarded being positive for a wheat allergy. However if you have been avoiding all wheat for some weeks before the test then there will be no wheat allergen present and this test for wheat allergy could show a false negative.

Sufferers — after medical diagosis has been confirmed —are advised to eliminate wheat from their diet altogether and replace with rice, corn, millet, buckwheat or potatoes.

Wheat Intolerance

Because of space limitations and the need to explore the real facts about celiac diseases and wheat intolerance which are very closely related to wheat allergy issues we have created a separate page on celiac disease and wheat intolerance .

What is Wheat Intolerance or in this case Gluten Intolerance?

Wheat intolerance or rather Gluten intolerance – otherwise known as celiac disease also spelt as coeliac disease outside of north America – effects around one in a thousand people usually diagnosed between 30 and 45 but can affect babies and elderly people as well. Generally symptoms will include weight loss (to be expected if the problem is affecting the ability of the intestine to work work properly) vomiting and Diarrhea (spelt diarrhoea in the UK) a longer list of celiac disease symptoms is available here

Although Celiac disease and other wheat intolerance issues tend to run in families it is inherited through the genes rather than it being contagious in nature.

Coeliac disease can be easily diagnosed by a gastroenterologist (a specialist on issues in the stomach, kidneys, gall bladder, panaceas and intestine etc.) He or she will carry out a simple intestinal biopsy to remove a very small sample from the intestine tissue. This involves a flexible endoscope or TV camera being passed through the mouth into the stomach and upper intestine so that the lining can be inspected and a biopsy taken.

I personally have had three endoscope procedures to clear gallstones trapped in the common bile duct and insert plastic tubing “stents” to increase the size of the duct. Although it sounds horrible in reality it is done under sedation and is completely painless — twice I was not even aware of the procedure was still happening. (The third time I was under a full general aesthetic so I was completely unconscious the whole time. The surgeons wanted to do other work at the same time.)

The only realistic treatment available for people effected by Celiac disease or other wheat intolerance problems is a totally gluten-free diet.

What is wheat intolerance?

Although the reasons why people suffer from wheat intolerance are not entirely understood some experts believe it occurs when the person is unable to manufacture enough of the enzymes the body needs for the proper digestion of wheat.

However, Isabel Skypala, head of dietetics at London’s Royal Brompton Hospital, believes getting a proper diagnosis for wheat intolerance can be quite difficult.

“Some people find foods such as pasta and bread hard to digest. This is because pasta absorbs water, so it swells in the body and causes discomfort. Also it is fashionable to blame intolerance on wheat. People forget that other foods such as dairy which are spread on bread or sprinkled on pasta could be the offending culprit.” Isabel Skypala, Head of Dietetics at London’s Royal Brompton Hospital UK

Isabel went on to explain that one of the few ways of ensuring a proper diagnosis for wheat intolerance is by by a long term observation as a inpatient. This means the patient can be given wheat in different forms under very strict conditions (even whilst patient is blindfolded to they cannot know what they are eating). It is then necessary to wait for around three days or so whilst monitoring for any reactions by the body to confirm wheat intolerance or not. A food elimination program can then be started to look for other food allergies or food intolerances which may exist. Remember what we said earlier most people with a wheat intolerance problem will have a range of other food intolerance or food allergy issues as well.

Wheat Allergy Symptom Recognition

Wheat allergy is not a disease but a body reaction to gluten protein in food. In scientific terms it could be described as a response by the body producing Immunoglobulin (IgE) a protein designed to fight a very specific food substance that attacks the body — in this through a wheat allergy reaction. It circulates around the body though the blood system and can be detected by taking blood tests.

In some cases individuals will find they have “grown out” of the wheat allergy for example the body has started to manufacture its own enzyme capable of breaking down the wheat to make it digestible by the body.

Do not confuse wheat allergy with celiac disease a permanent life long reaction to gluten protein in substances such as wheat, barley etc.

Wheat Allergy Symptoms

Allergic reactions to wheat products may occur within a few minutes of consuming or inhaling wheat, up to a few hours. Some common symptoms include skin irritations, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting or respiratory irritation. See the article on wheat allergy symptoms in adults here for even more info on wheat allergy symptoms.

Wheat Allergy Effects On Overall Health

Wheat is known to be one of the two most important farming crops in the world competing with rice for top spot, However wheat is generally accepted as the most healthy farm crops relied on for so many countries as it’s main crop.

However because of our reliance on wheat we find that wheat allergy sufferers are under risk of missing out on so many vital nutrients offered by wheat in its natural, unrefined state including: vitamin B1, B2, B3, E, folic acid, calcium, phosphorus, zinc, copper, iron, and fiber.

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, also points out that wheat products offer several other important benefits. Published studies show that:

Women who eat whole grains typically weigh less than people who abstain from all wheat.

Eating whole grains of wheat can reduce the risk of metabolic syndrome.

Whole wheat grains help prevent gallstones a very major and painful medical problem often leading to a number of operations. (i have had three gallstone related operations so far and waiting for another as I write

Whole grains of wheat substantially lower risk of firstly developing and of helping to reduce the severity of Type 2 diabetes

Because of the fiber content in wheat, it also has a mildly laxative effect which helps to keep you regular in bowel movements.

The American Heart Foundation Journal in a featured article clearly established that post-menopausal women with hypertension (for example high blood pressure levels) or high levels of cholesterol or any other symptoms or indications of cardiovascular or coronary heart disease who were reguarly eating eating whole grains products such as wheat cereals no less than 6 times every week experienced much slower rate growth of atherosclerosis as well as and much less growth in their stenosis.

For clarification Atherosclerosis is the hardening and/or narrowing of arteries whilst stenosis relates only to narrowing of carotid arteries. This is obviously die to less buildup of cholesterol blocking the blood flow.

Wheat Allergy Diagnosis

If you are thinking you have a wheat allergy problem before choosing stop or even to drastically reduce wheat comsumption, you will need to get yourself an accurate diagnosis through your doctor.

The two most common methods of making a accurate diagnosis involves wheat allergy tests done alongside the normal analysis of family and medical history would be:-

1 A Cap Rast (also simply known as a Rast test. (RadioAllergoSorbenT) This is simply a small blood sample being sent for testing. If your body has produced antibodies to fight the damage being caused to the small intestines due to the wheat allergy then the test will indentify them and prove positive.

2. The cheaper, quicker and easiest way of wheat allergy testing involves making a small prick of the top layer of the skin and covering it with a small sample of the wheat germ. Some doctors prefer to spread the wheat germ oil over the skin and then prick through it into the top layer of skin thus pushing the wheat allergen into the skin. If the area becomes itchy then goes red and swollen it suggests the person is allergic to the wheat substance. The test only takes around 15 minutes to get a result.

However the most effective test refferered to Eliminatio Provocation Testing. In contrast to the Skin Prick Test (which takes taking only 15 minutes) this EPT will need to done over two to three weeks. The patient will then be required to totally eliminate all suspected food allergy substances. Only after all allergy symptoms have gone totally will the foods be added back into diet one at a time and waiting to see if symptoms reappear.

Wheat Allergy Treatment

Because wheat is a staple food product in just about every diet around the globe, it can be extremely difficult to avoid completely. More importantly, finding other sources for the nutrients provided by wheat can be challenging as well, especially in certain parts of the country (and the world) where health food stores are unheard of and Internet access is scarce. In these situations, simply do your best to avoid products containing wheat by arming yourself with information, meaning knowing which products contain wheat and knowing all of the possible alternatives.

For those seeking professional help, treatment is typically supervised by a dietician, which can help to ensure that the individual will follow a diet rich with B vitamins, calcium, zinc, etc. Special Wheat allergy diet sheets are available on this website which will help reduce the emergence of the symptoms.

Recognizing Wheat Allergy Problems

One of the best ways of educating yourself locally is to examine every label of the food products you buy. For example a label that says any of the following ingredients:-

soy sauce,

starch,

hydrolyzed vegetable protein

natural flavouring

could all contain hidden sources of wheat as their starting ingredient. This is not going to help your wheat allergy treatment.

Other more obvious sources of wheat include:

bran,

bread crumbs,

cereal extract,

couscous,

cracker meal,

vital gluten,

whole wheat flour,

enriched flour,

high-gluten

high-protein flour

and of course anything that starts with “wheat” such as wheat germ, malt and starch

Avoiding wheat allergy

There are a number of alternatives to wheat available that you could look out for when shopping which will not affect your wheat allergy problem. For example

amaranth,

buckwheat (this product is NOT related to wheat),

bean flour,

kamut,

nut meal

It would be wrong of me not to mention quinoa at this point. Although most readers will never have heard of quinoa it is considered to be a complete protein with all nine essential amino acids.

Most experts in food technology would consider quinoa to the healthiest food available worldwide as it is also rich with magnesium, manganese, iron, copper, phosphorous and B2. Whilst grown and harvested as a grain it is considered that it is much more related to the spinach family —although looking at it one would never think it!
